METANOIA

BY YAĞMUR BAŞGÜL

BRIEF

To what extent do our emotions affect our experiences? Do we have the power to influence what is going around us? Can our interactions create unexpected consequences? All of these questions are explored in this interactive animation, …, while creating a personal journey in between our emotions and their reflections. It may not change the way we live, but it will certainly create awareness in goodwill.

RESEARCH

Zafer Aracagök, in his article ‘Decadence and Actio in Distans’, talks about the concept of action at a distance and refers to it as the phenomenon in which two distant masses upon each other. This interaction does not have to be objectively defined, rather it can be seen through the consequences. I believe this definition can be applied to human relations. The way we see, feel, and act can change our daily experiences and how we perceive what is going around us. Hence, I came up with this animation where the audience can experience the consequences regarding their emotional responses at a distance. The consequences can be seen through the colour change as colours are one of the most important components for creating certain emotions according to psychological analysis.

FUNCTION

The experience of the animation is audience dependent, meaning that they have the freedom to create their own experiences to an extent. To give this freedom, I created an interactive animation. While experiencing a first-person perspective, the audience gets to demonstrate their own emotional responses and experience their consequences in a medium that is unusual to interact with. Hence, this experience is aimed to create awareness on our power to direct experiences according to our emotional responses and communicate their influence in goodwill. Although an animation can be considered as a one-time experience, the audience can interact with it as many times as wished to different experiences.

CONCEPT

Briefly, Metanoia is an interactive animation that tells an abstract story about the echoes of emotions in daily life. The representations of each emotion are taken from a short story written by me and describe a journey in different mood swings. With the animation, the audience is asked to show facial expressions freely and experience the influence it has on the screen. This interaction is meant to create an awareness of our potential influences in our daily lives. The idea of ‘actio in distans’ is explored through this rare experience, as well as the possibilities of unusual interaction.

METANOIA BOOKLET

I was wandering on a frosty night, rubbing my hands. There was a shadow reaching out to me and saying “Come with me, I will share your feelings and emotions, won’t you want that?” I hold the hands, shocked, and started wondering around.

We went through a garden as I was calm. Were these flowers and the greens mine? They remind me all the ideas trying to expand and evolve. With the peace, their leaves blown with the wind, flown and fell into a puddle of water, the puddle formed by my tears.

As they fell, they were surrounded by sadness, and grief, and sorrow, one by one, little but strong. It was like trying to escape from drowning in this little puddle. What was left in me, the things I could not say, the things I could not share res cued me and brought me to the top,
I escaped.

And suddenly I was faced with myself, everything that was growing inside me. I wanted to scream and shout, ran around and get rid of everything like an erupting volcano. Why was it so hard? Why was it so hard to speak? To spill out everything I did not like?

Breathing deeply, I felt my nose tingling. It was the time for me to return back to home. I dreamed of a rainbow in the middle of the dark, looked towards it. Left the shadow on my arm into the darkness of the night, beard the frost and headed to happiness all along.
